Sorry that I didn't post this last week! I was busy hanging out with major world leaders and offering them solutions to the economic crisis. Don't worry guys, I'm all over it!
Anyway, here are the instructions for this week's blog assignment:
1) Go to lyrics.com, songlyrics.com, or elyrics.com. Find the lyrics to a song that tells a story. Try to use a song that has a connection to something political or historic connected to it. IF THERE IS CUSSING IN THE LYRICS, PLEASE HYPHEN OUT THOSE WORDS! YOU WILL FAIL THE ASSIGNMENT IF YOU HAVE PROFANITY ON YOUR BLOG!
2) You can either a) copy and paste the lyrics of a song into your posting ---OR---b) embed a song onto your blog (you can do this through imeem.com)
3) Write 3-5 sentences in which you analyze the two following aspects of the lyrics:
a) What is the purpose of the lyrics to the song? (What is it arguing? What is its larger
purpose?)
b) What is the historical context of the song? Remember, historical context will look at the background information that makes the song understandable.
For example, if you listen to Bob Marley's music, the historical context can relate to the history of slavery and Jamaica, the evolution of Carribean-style music, Rastafarianism, the censorship of his music in the United States by the CIA, etc. It will be helpful for you to find out the year the song was most popular and when it was written, then google that year to get a general sense of what was going on.
