I know the Constitution says we have a right to own weapons, but from where I stand, when a man can sling an assault rifle over his shoulder in the context of a protest against government, that borders on treason and anarchy.
I can only imagine what kind of reaction we would have seen on the news five years ago if people had brought guns to the immigration rights protests, or last year, if gays and lesbians took to the streets with firearms to protest Proposition 8. So why the double standard? If you are a liberal protestor you are a wingnut and a threat to the government, but if you identify as a conservative fringe person it is acceptable to carry weapons and flaunt threatening signs and just chalk it up to your Constitutional rights? What about the rights of the guy you are standing next to who is terrified to disagree with you? In a democracy, this is no way to express our opinions.
America needs a reality check. We need to sit down at the table with our opposing viewpoints and discuss everyone's needs. We need to turn Fox and CNN off and have conversations with our neighbors and our communities. We need to promote education, not violence. And we definitely need to outlaw the "right" to carry a gun to protests. Otherwise, how can we call ourselves "civilized"?
